Daily life discoveries: an archive
What was so important among everything that weltwärts-volunteers have experienced, learned or that they were given, that it shouldn’t disappear? This one object, picked out individually and passed on, is the object of this exhibition. The different objects stand for thoughts, experiences and values that we would like to preserve for the future.

This kind of basket is used daily in Laos to store sticky rice and keep it warm. People take it to work and on trips. In Laos you very often hear the words "Kin kaao!" (Literally for: Eat rice!) as a request to join a dinner table!
It was given to me as a goodbye-present, filled with rice, and now I leave it to you for the In.Box project.

I used to eat almost every day at a local restaurant that makes typical Ugandan lunch: Delicious beans, either with rice or with plantains. I brought a few pounds of beans with me so that I can also prepare this simple but delicious food at home.

Shortly after my arrival my colleagues demonstrated against the Free Trade Agreement (TLC) that I had come to know as positive through my studies in “International law”. This button stands for my experience: broaden my perspective and be more critical.

This is a typical Indian jewelery. It was proudly given to me by a girl from the orphanage that had acquired this treasure from a major city nearby. Even though she owns very little, she gave me this jewelery as a good-bye gift, a touching gesture, which has made this object to me into a symbol of generosity and gratitude.

The Mate is a vessel for the same-named national drink of Argentina. It is part of everyday life and every Mate drinker has his own philosophy about it. For me it symbolizes convivial get-together with strangers and friends, letting time simply pass, the victory of relaxation over the pressure of performing, enjoying life consciously, in a country that has become a little bit of a home to me. I bought my purple Mate vessel on a "hippie market" at the Plaza Dorrego in San Telmo, Buenos Aires.

My 18-year-old host sister gave me this figure for my 20th birthday which I spent in Ecuador. The Ecuadorians love kitschy things and sometimes their flats are full of it.

“Our Lady of Guadalupe” is the greatest idol of all Mexicans. The small altar represents the mixture of religion and kitsch that is so often present in Mexico.

This is an egg whip. It is used in South Africa to cook pap, maize mash. Pap is a staple food there and thereby links the different population strata – no matter if rich or poor.

In Tigua, a small town in the middle of the Andes, the Tigua-Art has developed, which is also known outside of Ecuador. Creating these paintings is a lot of work and is being sold on the roads for very little money. This chest reminds me of this and of course of the beautiful Andes.

A pressure cooker is used in Brazil for cooking beans, which in combination with rice are one of the national dishes. I received this cooker as a gift from a homeless man who makes items for sale out of “junk”. I connect with this object the experience that I receive a lot more than I can give. That I, a rich German girl, have nothing to offer to a Brazilian homeless man, but he offers me all that he has at that moment. Something new is being created from a simple box, a piece of junk. Something new is being created between two people, between two worlds!

The flag of South Africa for many South Africans is not only a symbol of liberation from apartheid, but also, as here, an example of collaboration - with the possibility to earn money.

This is a cassette of the church choir that I also sang in. A service without a choir is unthinkable in Tanzania and they have developed their own style long ago – a great example of the Africanization of colonial cultural assets.

I brought this little water package from Togo to remind myseld of how privileged we are in Germany. In Togo, I could not just turn on the faucet and drink. Instead, the realty is this: water that tastes like plastic.

Experiment e.V.
From my host country Argentina I brought back the seeds of Paraná pine (Araucaria angustifolia). A seed stands for potential, for growth, for plant growth in the direct sense, and thus symbolizes understanding and respect for nature, which is absolutely necessary in these times of climate change and growing world population. But indirectly a seed also stands for the planting of an idea or a thought. During my volunteer year I brought seeds to a foreign country and took seeds back home from there, and I hope that at least some of these seeds will germinate and grow.

To me this piece of fabric represents the colorful diversity and zest for life in Togo. All the people wear these fabrics that have hundreds of colors and patterns. They are sold everywhere along the streets. For me this is a beautiful souvenir of a great time in Togo.

I helped in the production of Waldorf dolls and learned the entire manufacturing process. I was very impressived by the preciseness and quality of the work. I learned a lot from the women who work in the "Q'ewar" project here in Peru.

Traditional garment of almost every Nepalese woman / a multifunctional piece of cloth: tied around the body, it warms during the winter, placed over the head during the summer it provides protection from sun and dust, it is used as a backpack for kids, or as a support for back and organs when wrapped firmely around certain body parts.

This is not a court hammer, but a simple bottle opener - a symbol for the desire for a sugary drink. In Uganda people only reluctantly renounce a soft drink from the Coca Cola or Pepsi Company. "You in Europe and America eat sugar, we drink it," a fellow teacher once said to me. And I have to agree with him.

These lamps made of old Milo-tins illuminate the nocturnal markets of Accra. Since it already gets dark in Ghana at around 7pm, every merchant who wants to or needs to sell goods during the evening hours has such a lamp.

I bought these sandals on a market at the beginning of my stay. I have worn them until they fell apart and could not be repaired anymore. Like many commodities in Nigeria they are of low quality, and therefore low in price and need repairs after a short time, which in turn creates new businesses.

A good opportunity to get to know life in Vietnam “rapidly” was bicycling in the streets of Hanoi. Along with a unique way of driving, cold sweat and a desperate expression on my face I rode my bike 20 to 30 km every day.

Indispensable and easy to buy at every corner: On markets, in the supermarket, at street vendors. You need them to light the many chapatti-grills: delicious flatbreads, which are eaten pure, or with eggs and vegetables, or to light candles when every once in a while the power goes out.

Hanoi round trip. In the public rocking bus. To work and beyond in every corner of the city, also off the major tourist paths. Being part of it, being among Vietnamese people. Do things that they do. Use their transport system. Just normal: every day life.
